B. Monét, Film Writer and Director

Let’s meet B. Monét, a Maryland native now based in New York who has worked to become a distinguished filmmaker, writer, and director dedicated to bringing underrepresented voices to the forefront ad exploring themes of identity, society, race, and culture in her films. Her journey into storytelling was sparked from seeing Black women as storytellers humanizing the people around them in shows like Moesha and Living Single. B. Monét initially pursued journalism to highlight the stories of the voiceless. However, a transformative study abroad experience in Italy broadened her worldview. With the encouragement of her creative writing professor, she shifted her focus to film.

Her career has since flourished, earning her numerous awards and recognitions. Monét's impressive portfolio includes directing and collaborating with prominent stars such as Janet Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Gabrielle Union, and Reese Witherspoon. She has worked with major brands like Crate and Barrel, Target, Olay, and Levi’s. Her films have been featured in over a dozen film festivals, and in 2019, she made history as the first Black woman to direct and star in a Cadillac commercial. Her first feature documentary, Black Girls, is a celebration of Black women and girlhood, exemplifying her commitment to authentic storytelling.
